Member: Evan Andrews
Branch: South West
It's time to meet another BDAQ Member and your current State Treasurer! After stepping up to the plate in late 2017, Evan has taken on a lot more than your typical Treasurer. He not only looks after BDAQ's finances, but also oversees our staff and general day-to-day operations. Some have coined Evan BDAQ's 'Big Brother' because of his seemingly omniscient nature! His keen eye for detail, passion for BDAQ and high expectations for professionalism have helped push the Association forward into what's looking to be a fantastic fourth decade.
Now... let's get to know him shall we?
Despite being in the industry for 35 years, it took the builder he was working for being disappointed with the standard of drawings he was seeing from ‘supposed’ building designers to bring Evan into the Building Design world.
Involvement in BDAQ
Evan joined BDAQ as a Student Member back in 2007, before he gained his Low Rise QBCC licence in 2008. He joined "to network and gain knowledge from others".
He says BDAQ has been important to him because he has learnt so much and gained wonderful friendships, especially in his involvement at state level.
Evan was BDAQ's South Western and Darling Downs Delegate before stepping up to his current role as State Treasurer. He currently sits on both the Events and Association Policies & Guidelines Sub-Committees, which keep him nice and busy!
In 2019, he was awarded the President's Award for his high level of involvement in so many aspects of the Association's operations.
He'd like to tell other members: "Get involved at a higher level with BDAQ, it’s so rewarding (although sometimes frustrating). I split my week between designing/drafting, selling building contracts for a local major builder, and as Treasurer of BDAQ. There’s always time to fit something more into your life!"
Evan now specialises in plans for residential builders as a sole trader. It's earned him a BDAQ Regional award for multi-residential units <6 dwellings, and a State award for small lot. We asked him a few questions about his work:
o What are your mix of clients?
"Return, regulars, new, builders, developers . . . Mainly regular/repeat clients, I don’t really take on new clients, mostly they are project builders or smaller builders."
o What software do you use?
"Chief architect (the best!)"
o If you use 3D, what do your clients think of it?
"They love it, especially the reno/extension jobs!"
o Typically how long does a project take to pass through the practice?
"Less than 2 days" Speedy!
o What sort of payment regime do you have with clients?
"Usually fixed rate/m², paid on completion."
o How do you handle difficult clients?
"I get rid of them quickly – life is too short"
· Do you enjoy being a practice owner, and what in particular?
"Of course! I love the freedom"
Evan was born in New Zealand and migrated to Australia in 1981. He's now married with three grown-up kids (22, 20, 18), enjoys Footy (Rugby Union, and AFL) and a glass (or several) of red in the evening.
